Dr Susan Pond AM has a distinguished record in medicine, science and business.

Sue has been a member of ASCEPT since 1973, after graduating with first class honours from the University of Sydney as Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, Dr Pond became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and obtained the Doctor of Medicine degree from UNSW in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney.

 

 

Sue obtained specialist credentials in clinical toxicology and qualified as a member of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology and the American College of Medical Toxicology. Dr Pond was appointed to the Faculty of Department of Medicine at UCSF and remained there for six years before returning to Australia to join the Department of Medicine at the University of Queensland where she was later appointed to a Personal Chair.

 

 

Sue has been a member of ASCEPT Council and instrumental in establishing the discipline of clinical toxicology in Australia, the toxicology section in ASCEPT and adding the T (standing for Toxicology) to ASCEP as the society was formerly known.

 

 

Dr Pond has been awarded the Wellcome Australia Medal, an Order of Australia (AM), the Michael Rand Medal, the Australian Centenary Medal and Doctor of Medicine honoris causa by the University of Queensland and elected as Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. Dr Pond has a very extensive patent filing and publication record, most recently as an author of a manuscript published in Nature Medicine in March 2009 which reported the results of the largest Phase II cell-delivered gene therapy trial conducted to date. From 2004-2008, Dr Pond was Director and, from 2007, Chairman of the Australian biotechnology industry organisation, AusBiotech. She has held many other Board positions including Chairman of the Australian Drug Evaluation Committee (ADEC).
