A Q&A with Dr Maddie Coward-Smith
What is your current role, and how long have you been in this position?
My current role is an academic at UTS where I teach advanced pharmacology. Although I have been at UTS the past two and a half years, I have only been in this role since May this year.
How did you get started in your field?
My mum was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition when I was young that severely impaired her quality of life. Fortunately, she was put on medication that completely transformed her life. Seeing the impact that science had on my mum’s life, inspired me to pursue a career in research.
Are there any achievements or milestones that you’re particularly proud of?
A career highlight was at WCP2026 where I was incredibly privileged to have been awarded the Bellberry New Investigator Award.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy supporting my AFL team (Go Roos!), walking to my local Sunday market and exploring our local national park/beaches.
If you weren’t in your current career, what do you think you’d be doing?
Before starting my studies, I was very interested in archaeology and palaeontology. I think that if I hadn’t chosen a career in cardiorespiratory research, I would have pursued a career in archaeology or palaeontology.
What’s one skill you’d love to learn?
I would love to be fluent in a second language.
