A Q&A with Dr. Iris Lim
What are the main projects you are working on right now?
I am currently working on projects investigating urogenital smooth muscle function. I am interested in understanding how drugs and signalling pathways influence urinary tract function. I am also working on education research projects exploring how educational escape rooms can be used to support student engagement and learning.
What aspects of your work do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy that my work lets me combine curiosity, creativity and people. I love the hands-on problem-solving involved in experimental pharmacology, but I also really enjoy teaching and mentoring students. It is especially rewarding when a student starts to understand a concept that once felt difficult or abstract.
Are there any achievements or milestones you’re particularly proud of?
I am particularly proud of receiving three education-related recognitions within the span of a year: the ASCEPT Gillian Shenfield Early Educator Award, a National Citation for teaching, and being named in the Top 5 for the AFR Higher Education Awards. I never set out expecting my teaching innovation work to grow in this way, so it has been very meaningful to see this work recognised by both the pharmacology and higher education communities.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy a lot of things outside of work, including running, music, musicals, escape rooms, cooking and travelling. I like having different hobbies that let me be creative, social and challenged in different ways.
