A Q&A with Dr Wessel Burger
What is your current role, and how long have you been in this position?
I am a Senior Research Officer in the Structural Biology Division at WEHI, where I started in 2023.
What are the main projects you are working on right now?
I am finalising my first PostDoc project, which characterises the function and biological significance of a novel binding pocket at Frizzled receptors – a GPCR family central to cell growth, division and development. Concurrently, I am initiating a project funded by my EL1 Investigator grant, which investigates how Frizzled receptors activate distinct signalling pathways by recruiting and partnering with different co-receptors in response to the endogenous agonist Wnt.
How did you get started in your field?
My GPCR research began during my Master’s at Leiden University in the Netherlands, where I investigated the binding kinetics of novel ligands for the A3 adenosine receptor through radioligand association, dissociation and competitive binding assays using membranes. A good baptism to GPCR pharmacology…!
Do you have a favourite travel destination or a place you’d like to visit next?
Nepal! In my holidays and weekends I like going on overnight hikes, and hiking in Nepal is a bucket list item that I really want to realise. Here in Australia I would really like to do the Jatbula trail near Katherine in the Northern territory.
