Message from the WCP 2026 Congress Chair

On behalf of the Organising Committee, IUPHAR and ASCEPT, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the 20th World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology 2026 (WCP2026).

Together, we are grateful to the many individuals and organisations whose support, participation and commitment helped make this global gathering such a memorable and successful event.

It was a privilege to welcome the global pharmacology and therapeutics community to Melbourne (Narrm) from 12–17 July 2026. Bringing together students, early career researchers, clinicians, scientists, educators, industry leaders, innovators in drug discovery and development, and colleagues from around the world created a truly inspiring and collaborative environment.

WCP2026 celebrated the diversity, excellence and innovation that defines our profession. The commitment, enthusiasm and expertise shared throughout the Congress demonstrated the strength of our global community and the importance of working together to advance pharmacology and therapeutics for the benefit of patients and communities worldwide.

Most importantly, I would like to thank all delegates for your participation, engagement and contribution to the Congress. Through your presentations, discussions, questions and networking, you helped create a vibrant and stimulating scientific meeting that fostered new ideas, collaborations and lasting connections.

I would also like to acknowledge our distinguished speakers, session chairs and abstract authors, whose insights and expertise formed the foundation of an outstanding scientific program. Your willingness to share knowledge and experience enriched the Congress and inspired all who attended.

We are deeply grateful to our sponsors and exhibitors, whose partnership and support played a vital role in the success of WCP2026. Beyond their generous contribution, they helped showcase innovation, facilitate important conversations and strengthen connections between academia, healthcare and industry.

A special acknowledgement is due to the Local Organising Committee, the WCP2026 leadership group, our Scientific Chairs and our professional conference management team, whose dedication and hard work the last 9 years brought this Congress to life. Your passion, professionalism and attention to detail ensured that WCP2026 was a welcoming, inclusive and rewarding experience for all.

We are particularly proud that WCP2026 reflected our shared commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, bringing together voices and perspectives from across the world. The strength of our community lies in its diversity, and it was wonderful to see this reflected throughout the scientific program, discussions and connections formed during the week.

Thank you for being part of WCP2026 and for helping make this milestone Congress such a success. We hope you enjoyed not only the exceptional scientific program, but also the opportunity to experience the culture, creativity and hospitality of Melbourne (Narrm) and Australia.

We look forward to continuing the conversations, collaborations and friendships established during WCP2026 as we work together to shape the future of pharmacology and therapeutics.

With sincere appreciation,

Professor Carl Kirkpatrick
Congress Chair, WCP2026

ASCEPT Members making an impact

We want to celebrate our members who are making an impact in all walks of life. Do you know of someone who should be congratulated or highlighted?

We will start the ball rolling this month but encourage everyone to send one or two sentences praising an ASCEPT member to ascept@ascept.org. If you’d rather remain anonymous, let us know.

Shane was recognised in this year’s Australia Day Honours with the Order of Australia Medal for his contribution to community health. He was the 2018 recipient of the ASCEPT Teaching Excellence Award in recognition of his innovative approach to pharmacology learning and teaching and generations of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists have benefited from the ease with which he adapts to the learning needs of his students. As the co-author of a multi-award-winning Fundamentals of Pharmacology, currently in its 9th edition, his gift as an educator has extended across Australia and the Pacific region, as well as to the UK. The 3 additional textbooks he has co-authored, as well as his education publications spanning almost 3 decades, attest to his commitment to quality pharmacology education, particularly for medicine and the allied health fields. Congratulations, Shane!

Andrew and his Precision Medicine Team do a wonderful job raising money for cancer research by cycling 450km each year for the Tour De Cure SA Discovery Tour. For those less inclined to hit the South Australian wine regions, donations are welcome. Amazing work Andrew!

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

ASCEPT EDI at WCP 2026 (Melbourne/Narrm)

We were delighted to see you at WCP2026!

The World Congress of Pharmacology 2026 was opened with a Welcome to Country delivered by Aunty Zeta. We thank Aunty Zeta for welcoming delegates to Narrm and recognise the Traditional Owners’ and Custodians’ enduring connection to Country and pay our respects to Elders past and present.

The ASCEPT EDI Committee had an active presence at the ASCEPT stall. This provided a valuable opportunity to connect with delegates from diverse backgrounds and to discuss equity, diversity, and inclusion in pharmacology at an international level.

The ASCEPT EDI badges were again a highlight, with many delegates wearing these badges to show support for our diverse membership demographics. Thank you for participating and supporting our EDI initiatives to create a more inclusive space within ASCEPT!

SIG updates

Use the drop-down menus below to view updates and learn more about ASCEPT SIG activities.

Overall, the R&I SIG delivered an outstanding presence at the World Congress of Pharmacology (WCP), held in Melbourne from July 13–17.

The SIG hosted five dedicated sessions, featuring 11 international abstract presentations and 19 presenters from across Australia. Throughout the conference, our members contributed extensively through session chairing, as well as poster and oral presentations. For many, this was their first international conference, making it especially rewarding to see their research showcased to such a large and diverse audience. We also extend our congratulations to our co-chair, Dr. Madison Coward-Smith, who was awarded the ASCEPT Bellberry New Investigator Award, along with the IUPHAR Best EMCR Poster Prize.

Social events included a joint networking catch-up with the CV SIG, which attracted more than 30 attendees on Monday, July 13. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect, and we are excited about the momentum this brings into the second half of the year.

Finally, we encourage all members to engage with Mighty Networks. Our “Meet the Researcher” series is currently underway, and we welcome all to participate. Be sure to follow our SIG on Mighty Networks to stay updated on member achievements and to learn about upcoming opportunities relevant to you.

Paris and Maddie (R&I SIG Chair and Co-chair)

The ASCEPT Student Forum would like to congratulate all of our student members who represented ASCEPT at the World Congress of Pharmacology 2026.

We are incredibly proud of all your contributions, from presenting high-quality research to engaging with the international pharmacology community and building valuable connections with researchers from around the world.

We also extend a special congratulations to Jack Zhang, this year’s recipient of the Garth McQueen Prize, on this outstanding achievement!

Thank you to all of our student members for representing ASCEPT with such enthusiasm and professionalism throughout WCP.

PAGANZ 2026 Melbourne

The Population Approach Group of Australia and New Zealand (PAGANZ) will hold its 2026 meeting at Monash University (Parkville Campus) in Melbourne, Australia, from 10-12 July 2026, immediately before WCP, bringing together experts in pharmacometrics, clinical pharmacology and systems pharmacology.

The event will feature hands-on workshops given by world leaders in the field, keynote presentations, and networking opportunities, fostering collaboration and innovation. The workshops are followed by the scientific program, including the keynote lecture by Prof Oscar Della Pasqua, presentations by international speakers Prof Catherijne Knibbe and Prof Don Mager, symposia on physiologically-based PK modelling and modelling in drug development, and several free oral sessions.

The meeting gives researchers, particularly students, the opportunity to present and discuss work in a collegial and friendly environment, and to win student prizes. PAGANZ is proud to be a world leader in teaching and support of research in this important area of pharmacology and drug development.

We look forward to seeing you there!
